Case study: DJ @ Pinakarri Community

Debbie, or DJ, lives at Pinakarri housing co-op since construction was first completed in June 1999.

For the first ten years of her life, DJ was in institutional care in New South Wales.  At six months old she had developed severe and profound intellectual and physical disabilities, later diagnosed as Rett Syndrome.  That was in 1976 when very little was known about Rett’s.  Her very young parents were advised that home care was not a viable option.

By the late eighties Debbie’s dad Paul, encouraged by his new partner Leonie, organised to bring DJ to Perth where they could care for her at home.

Paul, Leonie and DJ are co-founders of Pinakarri Community, a mixed equity housing co-op designed using the community focused, cohousing approach.  Paul and Leonie also brought their vision for a safe and secure home for Debbie, to provide for her future within a supportive, co-operative community.

“We really wanted Debbie’s life to be as normal as possible, in her own home surrounded by kind, competent neighbours,” recalled Debbie’s father, Paul Jack.

The housing co-operative has since undertaken an extensive refurbishment of DJ's home to ensure it meets her needs.

Debbie’s life at Pinakarri is exceptional due to the determination of her parents, a co-op that went above and beyond to support a vision, and improvements in services and resources over the decades.  However safe and affordable accommodation options for people with disabilities need to be the norm rather than the exception.

Tenancy & Property Management

We manage tenants and property with a difference -  the co-operative way.

We are interested in opportunities with support and commit to this approach.

The co-operative management model invites and empowers tenants to participate in, and to have a say about the management and maintenance of their homes.

Our services include all traditional tenancy and property management tasks, including rent collection and arrears management, lease paperwork, bond management, property condition reports, inspections and maintenance co-ordination.
